The Silent Genocide: Ethiopia’s War on Amharas and the West’s Indifference

Ethiopia, a country with a long history of resilience, is now witnessing one of its darkest periods where its own government is waging an undeclared war against its Amhara citizens. Systematic killings, extrajudicial executions, and mass atrocities have turned the Amhara region into a battlefield. Yet, the world remains largely silent. Western powers, which claim to champion human rights and democracy, have chosen to turn a blind eye to the suffering of millions. The so-called international community, always vocal when conflicts align with their geopolitical interests, remains eerily quiet as Amharas are slaughtered in their own homes, on the streets, and even in hospitals.
A Nation at War With Its Own People
The tragic murder of Dr. Andualem Dagne, a distinguished surgeon in Bahir Dar, is a glaring example of the brutality faced by Amharas. He was not a soldier, nor a politician just a doctor dedicated to saving lives. Yet, he was mercilessly gunned down, reportedly by government forces. His murder is not an isolated incident but part of a broader campaign of terror against the Amhara people. Just weeks before, Dr. Israel Tilahun was executed in Addis Ababa by a police officer in broad daylight, “his crime?” A minor traffic accident.
These assassinations are part of a disturbing trend where Amhara professionals, intellectuals, and community leaders are systematically eliminated under false pretexts. Many are accused of supporting Fano, the Amhara “self defense group”, as an excuse for their execution. The Ethiopian government does not need evidence being an Amhara in Ethiopia today is enough to put a target on one’s back.
Massacres in Silence: The Merawi Massacre
The scale of the violence goes beyond targeted assassinations. The Merawi Massacre saw Ethiopian federal forces storming homes, executing civilians in front of their families, and leaving bodies on the streets to rot. Witnesses described the horror of seeing their neighbors and family members executed at point-blank range. The Ethiopian Human Rights Council estimates that over 80 civilians were killed in Merawi alone. Yet, no serious international investigation has been conducted.
This is not an isolated case. Across Amhara towns and villages, thousands have been executed under the pretense of restoring law and order. Reports from Amhara Association of America (AAA) document the killing of thousands of Amharas since the government declared a state of emergency in August 2023.
Western Complicity Through Silence
Western nations, particularly the United States and the European Union, have long presented themselves as defenders of human rights. Yet, their response to Ethiopia’s ethnic cleansing of Amharas has been nothing but hypocrisy and inaction.
The U.S. ambassador to Ethiopia, Ervin Massinga, expressed “concern” over the Merawi Massacre but failed to call for concrete action.
The United Nations, an institution that regularly condemns human rights abuses in other nations, has barely acknowledged the plight of Amharas.
The African Union, headquartered in Addis Ababa, remains completely silent, proving that it is nothing more than a political puppet for Ethiopia’s ruling regime.
Why this silence? The answer is simple: Western interests trump Amhara lives. Ethiopia, under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, remains a strategic partner for the West. The U.S. and its allies continue to provide financial aid and diplomatic support to his government despite its ongoing human rights violations. The same governments that sanctioned Ethiopia during the Tigray conflict now pretend that the slaughter of Amharas is a domestic issue.
The Role of Social Media in Spreading Hate
Beyond government violence, social media platforms like Facebook have played a dangerous role in amplifying hate against Amharas. The lawsuit against Meta (Facebook’s parent company) revealed how the platform allowed hate speech to spread unchecked, leading to the murder of Professor Meareg Amare. His case is not unique Facebook’s algorithms have actively promoted inflammatory posts targeting Amharas, inciting violence and normalizing ethnic cleansing.
Despite overwhelming evidence, Meta has refused to take responsibility, proving that corporate profit matters more than human lives.
A Call for Action
The world cannot continue to ignore the genocide unfolding in Ethiopia. The international community, human rights organizations, and media outlets must:
1. Recognize the systematic killing of Amharas as genocide.
2. Sanction the Ethiopian government and its officials responsible for mass killings.
3. Launch independent investigations into the atrocities committed against Amharas.
4. Hold Western governments accountable for their silence and complicity.
5. Pressure social media companies to stop fueling ethnic violence.
The bloodshed in Ethiopia is not just an Ethiopian issue, it is a test of the world’s moral conscience. If the world fails to act now, history will remember this as yet another genocide that was ignored while innocent people were slaughtered in broad daylight. The Amhara people deserve justice, and it is the responsibility of all those who believe in humanity to stand up and speak out.
